Raghunātha on seeing absence

چکیده
Later Nyāya philosophers maintain that absences are real particulars, irreducible to any positives, we perceive. The fourteenth-century philosopher Gaṅgeśa argues for a condition on absence perception according which always perceive an as of its counterpositive, or corresponding absent object property. Call this the ‘counterpositive condition’. shows counterpositive is both supported by plausible thesis about epistemology relational properties and motivates defence irreducible. But against Gaṅgeśa, sixteenth-century Raghunātha his seventeenth-century commentators Bhavānanda, Jagadīśa, Gadādhara identify cases in fails. In article, I examine Nyāya-internal debate over condition. conclude makes compelling case

Seeing Seeing
This paper discusses several key issues concerning consciousness and human vision. A brief overview is presented of recent developments in this area, including issues that have been resolved and issues that remain unsettled. Based on this, three Hilbert questions are proposed. These involve three related sets of issues: the kinds of visual experience that exist, the kinds of visual attention th...
متن کاملOn Seeing Robots
Good Old Fashioned Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (GOFAIR) relies on a set of restrictive Omniscient Fortune Teller Assumptions about the agent, the world and their relationship. The emerging Situated Agent paradigm is challenging GOFAIR by grounding the agent in space and time, relaxing some of those assumptions, proposing new architectures and integrating perception, reasoning and actio...
متن کاملSeeing slow and seeing fast: two limits on perception.
Video cameras have a single temporal limit set by the frame rate. The human visual system has multiple temporal limits set by its various constituent mechanisms. These limits seem to form two groups. A fast group comprises specialized mechanisms for extracting perceptual qualities such as motion direction, depth and edges. The second group, with coarse temporal resolution, includes judgments of...

Recent studies revealed that although subterranean mammals inhabit a dark underground environment, they can still perceive light stimuli and use this to entrain their circadian activity rhythm. Regarding spatial orientation, olfactory and tactile cues are employed for short-distance; whereas for long-distance, subterranean mammals employ the earth's magnetic field and self-generated (vestibular...

I am grateful to Professor Lindley for taking the time to study my book Causality, and for summarizing its main ideas so crisply and lucidly to the readers of this Journal. I would like to comment on a couple of issues that I believe warrant further emphasis in discussing causality. The first concerns the importance of mathematical notation for distinguishing causal from associational relations...
